FALL 2009
Here are descriptions of where Mel will be conducting workshops in the fall of 2009. For specific information including class availability, class description, registration, tuition, accommodations, etc., please contact the individual workshop organizers listed on the Contact Info page.
Mel begins the fall season in Europe where he will be conducting a twelve-day, plein air workshop in September in the beautiful Greek Islands. First arriving in Athens and then taking a ferry to the island of Paros, famous for its vineyards, olive groves, and fruit trees, ideal painting locations await. In addition to the endless coastlines with pebbled beaches, sheltered bays, and coastal caves, the crystal clear seas and skies make for picture postcard vistas. On to the island of Santorini with its 900-foot cliffs and to the towns of Fira and Oia with their stunning sunsets, whitewashed homes, and blue-domed churches. Rich in art and culture, there will be time to sightsee and view the magnificient ancient sites and breathtaking scenery. Flying Colors Art Workshops organizes all of Mel's workshops in Europe and Mexico and, as always, chooses quality, comfortable accommodations. You may contact Flying Colors (see Contact Info. page) for a specific itinerary.
In October Mel will be in the beautiful seaport town of Beaufort, South Carolina where he will be conducting a five-day, indoor workshop for the Beaufort Art Association. This charming town, founded in 1709 and originally a port of entry and a fishing village, is the third oldest in North Carolina. Beaufort has a historic waterfront district where there are boats from all over the world. The Beaufort Historic District with its tree-lined, shaded streets is home to over 100 restored historic houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. The Beaufort Art Association Gallery is housed in the historic Elliott House. The Cape Lookout National Seashore is famous for its 169-foot Cape Lookout Lighthouse, which was built in 1859 and is one of the tallest lighthouses on the East Coast.
Mel concludes his 2009 schedule with a return visit to Middletown, Ohio during the second week in November to teach an indoor workshop at the Middletown Arts Center. Middletown, located in southwestern Ohio is situated between Cincinnati and Dayton. Founded in 1957 to promote and encourage creative expression through the visual arts, the Middletown Arts Center, a regional art facility, has a large painting studio, ceramics studio, craft room, black & white darkroom, and a jewelry studio. The Arts Center sponsors numerous exhibitions annually. Their recently renovated Exhibit Hall is used for various shows, meetings, and gatherings throughout the year.
